For over ten years Jovan C. Speller has had a dedicated career in the arts as a curator, artist, entrepreneur, advocate for emerging artists, and arts consultant. She is currently an independent curator and art consultant based in Minneapolis. She has curated and organized contemporary art exhibitions in DC, Chicago, Memphis, NY, Minneapolis, Winona and Rochester, MN. Jovan has been project manager for large-scale public art commissions for corporations and government entities across the District of Columbia. She holds a BFA in photography from Columbia College in Chicago and studied fine art and art history at Maryland Institute College of Art.
During the early part of her career Jovan focused on mentoring emerging artists and creating opportunities for them to exhibit their work and develop their craft. She has continued that work and now is consultant to visual artists, actors, filmmakers, writers, dancers and emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in the arts. Jovan is a recipient of the 2018 McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship, the 2016/2017 Jerome Emerging Artist Fellowship, and the 2015 MN State Arts Board Cultural Community Partnership grant with the Rochester Art Center. She has served as a grant panelist for the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council in MN, the DC Commission on the Arts and lectured at Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
